Abstract
Hyperhydricity or vitrescence was a frequent problem during the micropropagation of globe artichoke and it was influenced by medium composition, and type and concentration of cytokinins used in culture medium. Using a multiplication medium containing half-strength of NH4NO3 AND KNO3 and doubly weights of calcium chloride and magnesium sulphate specified for Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium recorded the lowest value of hyperhydric cultures percentage. In addition, this medium caused significant increases in leaves dry matter % as well as chlorophyll (a) and (b) content. Supplementation of MS medium with 2.0 mg/l kinetin + 1.0 mg/l IAA was the optimum for shoot proliferation with relatively low hyperhydricity
